In 2012, China’s online retail sales increased by 55 percent to $194 billion. Many industry researchers predict the Chinese e-commerce market value will surpass that of the US in 2013 to become the world’s largest at $265 billion, up another 37 percent.
An estimated 242 million Chinese consumers shop online, of which, 48% are women and 52% are men. While this is an astonishing figure, it is less than 20 percent of China’s total population, which means the market still has plenty of room to expand.
China’s e-commerce giant,
Alibaba Group, created an informative infographic on this phenomenal market.
